REVIEW

Lamb is delicious. Unfortunately, it was one of the most underutilized meats in the United States. After hearing about Fat Guy’s new Lamb Gyro Burger through Facebook, there was nothing stopping me from making the trip. Not even the fact that half of Oklahoma was on fire and the sky looked like it was going to open up and release an army of hellion furies upon the land. I was getting my Gyro Burger.

Upon entering, I remembered the one thing I hate about the Fat Guy’s ballpark location: the line to the cashier is in such a way if there’s any number of customers in line it can quickly crowd up the entryway. Beyond that, the restaurant has a nice layout with tables spilling outside allowing you to enjoy the beautiful day and the baseball game. My friend chose an empty table inside (hellions, remember?) while I ordered.

My friend wanted the Fat & Juicy Burger and I, of course, chose the Lamb Gyro Burger. The cashier, Courtney, asked what I wanted on my burger and I inquired about tzatziki. She seemed puzzled and said the burger did not come with a sauce. I crossed my fingers and hoped this was just an issue of staff not being being completely informed about a new product.  We rounded out the meal with a shared order of Original Ballpark Fries. For the sauces, I wanted to try the wasabi ketchup, but I stuck to something a little milder for my heat sensitive friend, the Parmesan peppercorn sauce.

Upon our burgers arriving, I quickly checked my gyro on a bun. Lo and behold, tzatziki was oozing out of the sides. The best way I can describe this burger is that it tastes exactly like a gyro… only held together with a different bread. It comes with lettuce, tomato, raw onion, and huge chunks of feta. (You can add more if you choose, but I’m a purist.) It had a strong lamb flavor, but overall it was dry and could have benefited from some more tzatziki. The Fat & Juicy Burger felt tough and dry. The pocket of cheese inside was not as fluid as it should have been. The Ballpark Fried were hot, but a tad overseasoned and had quite a few small, crunchy fries. The wasabi ketchup only had a mild heat and a sweet flavor whereas the Parmesan peppercorn had a strong flavor with vinegar overtones.

I left with my lamb craving fulfilled but was not overly impressed with this visit. With a little more attention to detail, this experience could have gone from decent to great.
